After a life of love and quiet grace, Cornell J. Munkvold, 91, has passed.

The following words honor a life that mattered to many.

The story begins in 1928, with the arrival of a life that would be cherished by many.

The memories of a long life are the inheritance of those who remain.

Cornell Munkvold, 91, died September 23 rd at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD surrounded by his family. Cornell was known by many as Corky. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the Viborg Community Building. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM Saturday, September 28, 2019 at the Church of the Nazarene in Viborg with a Prayer Service starting at 7:00 PM. Arrangements by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home. Cornell is survived by his 4 children Darell (Judy) of Sioux Falls, David (Janice) of Spicer, MN, Randy (Kathi) of Viborg and Corrine (Craig) Graves of Kirkland, WA; 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was a loving father, grandpa, brother and friend to many. Cornell was born on March 6 , 1928 to George and Marie (Isakson) Munkvold at their home place in Viborg. He joined the army and was stationed in Tacoma Washington, Philippines and Japan during his assignment. He married Lois Nelsen on September 6, 1949 in Viborg where they began their life together and started their family. He moved from the Viborg area to Sioux Falls circa 1957 where Cornell joined the police force and later got into the residential and commercial construction business for several years, building in several states across the US. Cornell was always willing to help friends and family with their construction projects. He returned to Viborg later in life where he was very active in the community, being a part of the Viborg Development Corporation, a member of the Viborg City Council and active with the local Lion's Club. Cornell was a long-time member of the Church of the Nazarene, where he worshiped until his death. A special thank you to the staff at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home for their loving care of Cornell during his time there. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be directed to the Church of the Nazarene.
