Howard E. Berthelsen, 86, has gone home, leaving behind a circle of those who loved him.

Here is a glimpse of the life he lived, in his family's own remembrance.

Born in 1928, Howard began a life that would touch many along the way.

Howard held deeply to the Presbyterian faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew him best.

Faith is a quiet companion through a long life. Howard's walked beside him.

Parker. Howard E. Berthelsen, 86 died Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the Avera Dougherty Hospice, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 2:30pm Sunday, July 19, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, Parker with burial and military honors at the Hurley Cemetery, Hurley, SD. Visitation with family present will be from 5-7pm Saturday at the Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home, Parker. Howard Elmer Berthelsen was born on October 8, 1928 at Parker, SD to Niels and Annie (Christensen) Berthelsen. He attended country school at District 79 and graduated from Parker High School in 1946. Before serving in the US Army during the Korean War her attended South Dakota State College in Brookings, SD. On June 11, 1950 he was united in marriage to Joy Bousfield at Parker. They farmed south of Parker their entire life. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hurley American Legion Post 21, and the DAV. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Joy; 2 children, Allan (Robin) Berthelsen, Parker and Kathy (Doug) Meyer, Lennox; 6 grandchildren, Josh (Brenda) Berthelsen, Jaime (Mike) Bartell, Zach (Jen) Meyer, Alaina Meyer, Audra Meyer, and Mason Meyer; and 7 great grandchildren, Madlyn, Mykah, Tobin, Victoria, Alexander, Connor, and Rebecca. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harlan and Everett, and sisters Loretta, Mildred, and Evelyn.
