With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Marcella Sunderland, 102,.

These words are offered in her memory — small, but heartfelt.

Marcella entered this world in 1914 — the start of a journey that would span 103 years.

Marcella held deeply to the Catholic faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

What Marcella believed shaped how she loved.

Marcella Isabelle (Husman) Sunderland was born on November 30, 1914 at Maurice, IA to Martin and Leona (Knewel) Husman. Marcella went to school in Canistota where she enjoyed playing basketball, graduating from Canistota High School in 1933. On February 25, 1936 she was united in marriage to Austin Isaac Sunderland at Sac City, IA. They made their home in Marion until 1969 when they moved to Parker. To this union a son was born, Allen Jerome. Over the years Marcella enjoyed working as a waitress at Stanley Corner, Smith's Café, and for the Halversons at the Parker Bakery. She was a member of St. Christina Catholic Church, Neighborhood Club, enjoyed dancing at the VFW, playing cards, bingo, and listening to the Minnesota Twins. For the last number of years she has been a resident at the Canton Good Samaritan Home. Marcella greatest joy was her grandkids; Kevin (Heidi) Sunderland, Hurley, Paula (Ted) Lingen, Jasper, MN, David Sunderland, Hartford, and Mary (Mike) Eliason, Canton; her great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many more Lingen family members that called her Grandma. She was preceded in death by her husband Austin in 1977, son Allen in 1981, grandson Nathan in 2015, and 3 siblings, Leonard, Grace and Norbert. A special thank you to her special friends Rick and Jan Opland who faithfully went to see her every Sunday and bring her communion while at Good Samaritan. In Lieu of flowers memorials maybe directed to the Rosehill Cemetery or Good Samaritan Scripture Walkway.
