Ruth's story began in 1924, and unfolded across the years that followed.
The slow accumulation of a full life leaves much to remember and much to learn from.
Ruth Schnabel Neuharth, 95 of Marion, SD and formerly of Eureka, SD, died Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at the Tieszen Memorial Home in Marion. Funeral services will be at a later date. Arrangements by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home, Parker, SD. Ruth was one of twin girls born to Adam and Magdalena (Hochhalter) Ketterling on October 6, 1924 near Pollock, SD. On September 14, 1947 she was united in marriage to Gottfried A. Schnabel. To this union 3 children were born, a son Ronald, and two daughters, Bonnie and Karen. They farmed near Venturia, ND for several years, then moved to a farm southeast of Eureka, SD. After the death of her husband, Gottfried in 1969, Ruth moved into Eureka along with her 3 children. On July 1, 1972 she was united in marriage to Theophil Neuharth. He died in 1999. At the age of 85 Ruth moved to Marion, SD to be closer to her daughters, where she lived her last 10 years; first in an apartment, then assisted living and finally the nursing home. She loved to play bingo, dominos, and many card games and was a fierce competitor. In her younger years, Ruth loved to dance the old time dances and said she would rather dance than eat. She spent many hours crocheting, sewing and visiting friends. She and Theophil together made many quilts. Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Bonnie (Greg) Nugteren and Karen Nugteren (Richard Schaefer), all of Monroe, SD; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; a brother Eugene (Clara) Ketterling, Waverly, IA; and a brother in law George Mogle, Miller, SD. She is also survived by 4 stepchildren, Karen Dunker, Aberdeen, SD, Wade (Kathy) Neuharth, Waukesha, WI, Judy (Tom) Singer, Mobridge, SD and Sanford (Gene) Neuharth, Omaha, NE; along with many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Gottfried and Theophil, a son Ronald, her twin sister Albertha Mogle, a brother Berthold Ketterling, a son in law Tony Nugteren, a step son Doyle Neuharth and a step son in law Gene Dunker.
